Founded in 2020 in Queenstown, GOKU began as a destination for authentic Japanese hot pot, specialising in shabu shabu and sukiyaki prepared with premium ingredients from Japan and New Zealand.
Today, GOKU has expanded to two locations – Queenstown and Remuera, Auckland. While Queenstown focuses on Japanese hot pot dining, our Auckland restaurant offers a refined Kappõ-style dining experience, highlighting seasonal ingredients and traditional Japanese techniques.

Shabu Shabu is an authentic Japanese dish of nabemono hotpot with thinly sliced meat and vegetables.
At Goku japanese restaurant we serve our delicious house-made Dashi broth at your table, on a personal stove, with your choice of ingredients to add and enjoy, and house-made dipping sauces.
Sukiyaki (鋤焼, or more commonly すき焼き; [sɯ̥kijaki]) is a Japanese dish that is prepared and served in the nabemono (Japanese hot pot) style.
It consists of meat (usually thinly sliced beef) which is slowly cooked or simmered at the table, alongside vegetables and other ingredients, in a shallow iron pot in a mixture of soy sauce, sugar, and mirin. The ingredients are usually dipped in a small bowl of raw, beaten eggs after being cooked in the pot, and then eaten.
Generally sukiyaki is a winter dish and it is commonly found at bōnenkai, Japanese year-end parties.
Kappō is a traditional Japanese dining style where chefs prepare dishes directly in front of guests, focusing on seasonality, craftsmanship and interaction.
